14-Year-Old Injured In Detroit Shooting, 2 Teens Arrested: Police

DETROIT — A teen was shot and injured Sunday night in Detroit, according to police.

The shooting happened at 9:40 p.m. Sunday near Farmer Street and Grand River in the downtown area, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison told reporters.

Bettison said there were two large groups of teens who got into a fight. That's when Bettison said one teen pulled out a gun and fired shots, striking a 14-year-old in the chest.

The teen was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Bettison said.

Two teens, a 16-and 17-year-old, were arrested in connection with the shooting, Bettison said.

The shooting happened as Bettison said roughly 60 kids from Detroit and the metro region gathered in the city's downtown area. He said police will also hold parents accountable for the shooting.

"You need to know where your children are," Bettison said. "This police department will hold parents accountable," adding not just Detroit parents, but also parents that let their kids Uber into the city.

"It was a lot of kids coming from a lot of different places," Bettison said.

Bettison also reminded people that there is a 10 p.m. curfew for kids under 15. The curfew is extended to 11 p.m. for 16 and 17-year-olds. He said Detroit Police will continue enforcing those curfews.
