📰 News we're reading

1. 492 white students enrolled in Dearborn Public Schools Virtual (K-12) in 2024-25 (westernwaynetoday.com) — Dearborn families using the district's virtual K-12 program can see how enrollment has shifted this year, with 515 students total and 492 identified as white, according to state data. The report also notes Dearborn City School District context and statewide per-pupil funding increases that shape local school resources.

2. Michigan teen portrayed as leader in Halloween terror plot (dailygazette.com) — Federal prosecutors say several Dearborn residents, including two teens, are at the center of an alleged ISIS-inspired plot to attack an LGBTQ+ club in Ferndale, following earlier online discussions about targeting Chicago's Pride Parade. Court records describe years of radicalized chats, weapons purchases, and scouting trips, while defense attorneys argue there was no imminent threat and that the case overstates online talk.

3. Teen Who Stopped Mall Gunman Sentenced For Carrying Weapon Illegally (americanliberty.news) — Dearborn residents following the Fairlane Town Center shooting case now know that 19-year-old Martinez Long, who fatally shot an armed attacker there, received two years' probation for carrying a concealed handgun without a license. Prosecutors ruled his use of force self-defense, but Michigan's concealed-carry law still brought him into court under a youthful-trainee program.

4. UMich offering only Coca-Cola products across campus (michigandaily.com) — If you're on the UM-Dearborn campus this fall, expect vending machines and dining spots to switch over to Coca-Cola-owned drinks only under a new university-wide contract. The deal promises scholarships and sustainability support, but also pushes out smaller brands, sparking debate over student choice and organic options.
