📰 News we're reading

1. Dearborn considers 6-month pause on new data centers amid AI boom (mlive.com) — Dearborn officials are advancing a six-month pause on new data centers so they can craft detailed rules on environmental, infrastructure, and neighborhood impacts. The moratorium, expected from October through March 2027, follows regional controversies over massive AI-driven computing projects and would clarify how such facilities fit into Dearborn's zoning and long-term land-use goals.

2. 1 African American student made up 4% of Dearborn Newcomer College Prep Academy enrollment in 2024-25 (westernwaynetoday.com) — Dearborn Newcomer College Prep Academy enrolled just one African American student in 2024-25, representing 4% of its 25-student body, with white students making up the remaining 96%. As part of Dearborn City School District, the school's numbers feed into broader shifts in Michigan enrollment, while Edsel Ford High School currently has the district's highest African American enrollment.

3. A 'Living Roof' is Growing Atop Ford's Largest Factory–Saving Energy and Boosting Birds (goodnewsnetwork.org) — A massive "living roof" atop Ford's Rouge factory in Dearborn is cutting energy use while creating new habitat for birds, bees, and other wildlife. Installed in 2002, the 454,000-square-foot green roof also helps control stormwater and has transformed one of the city's most industrial sites into a surprising biodiversity hotspot.

4. Man Justifiably Kills Shooter In Self-Defense, Still Gets Punished By Michigan Anyways – [your]NEWS (yournews.com) — A July 3 shooting at Dearborn's Fairlane Town Center led to a 19-year-old man being found to have acted in self-defense, yet still receiving two years' probation for carrying a concealed firearm. The case, detailed by Wayne County prosecutors and a Michigan judge, underscores how state gun laws and youthful trainee provisions can affect Dearborn-area residents involved in self-defense incidents.
