Q: Why did you decide to become a doctor?
A: My brother had asthma. Fifty years ago, they didn’t have inhalers. We had to live within a mile or so of an emergency room.
Q: What was your biggest surprise when you started practicing medicine?
A: I knew I would like it, but I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed working with patients. I live the relationship I build with patients. It is life-long learning.
Q: What once piece of advice would you give someone studying medicine?
A: It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Pace yourself.

Q: Where do you see your field in 10 years?
A: I think people will always need primary care physicians. It’s difficult to say exactly what the future holds. We’ll need to be flexible and open-minded in order to adapt to new technologies.
