Shelby Township Man Charged in Dearborn Home Invasion Attempt

Police are continuing investigation to determine if suspect can be tied to other home invasions in the city.

A Shelby Township man was arrested and charged with attempted home invasion after a Dearborn resident reported being awakened by someone trying to break into her home, Dearborn police said.

The woman, who lives in the 5900 block of Horger, said she heard someone knocking on her front and side doors about 8:45 am. on Thursday, Oct. 15 She peeked outside the window and saw an occupied black Ford with the motor running parked in her driveway, then heard the suspect trying to force open the rear sliding door.

The suspect, later identified as Shady Bin-Emad-Sami Karim, 27, only managed to open the door about two inches, then fled when he saw the homeowner, police said.

Police stopped Karim about two blocks from the home. He made statements that placed him at the woman’s home and was arrested.

Karim was arraigned before Judge William Hultgren in 19th District Court on Oct. 16 and charged with attempted home invasion, a five-year felony, and as a fourth-offender habitual offender.

Hultgren set bond at $20,000 and ordered Karim to wear a GPS tether if released.

In a statement, Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said police believe Karim may be responsible for other home invasions in the area. The investigation is continuing.

“Our patrol officers and detectives did an excellent job which resulted in an arrest that may close several home invasion cases in Dearborn,” Haddad said.
