Wayne County Recruiting Statewide to Fill 100 Positions
Jail officers are needed to fill positions left vacant through attrition and retirement.

DETROIT, MI – Renewing its push to fill more than 100 open positions, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that officials will launch a statewide recruiting effort.
Officers are needed to take on jobs in the jails that were vacated due to attrition and retirement, according to a news release.
New officers are paid a salary of $29,698 (bi-weekly pay period) along with applicable pay increases.

The salary package for full-time permanent employees includes benefits, including vacation and sick leave pay; health-care insurance, including vision and dental; long-term disability; life insurance; and a retirement plan.

Job candidates will be expected to pass a physical abilities test, along with required written tests and a completed job application.
In the physical test, which must be completed within five minutes and 35 seconds, prospective employees must demonstrate they can:
- Carry a 40-pound weight a distance of 100 feet;
- Climb up and down a four-step staircase 15 times;
- Run about 330 feet around six cones; and
- Drag a 165-pound dummy 45 feet.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have a driver’s license and get a release from their doctor approving participation must also be presented for physical testing. A health screening form is available here.
In addition to successful completion of the physical test, applicants for Wayne County Jail officer positions in must have a high school diploma or GED and be qualified to obtain a concealed pistol license.
Applicants with felony convictions won’t be considered.
