14 Fires Reported in First 24 Hours of Detroit's Angel's Night Campaign

Seven of the fires were in structures — an average night for Detroit firefighters. Angel's night curfews, fuel sales restrictions in effect.

DETROIT, MI — Fourteen fires were reported during the first 24 hours of Detroit's three-day Angel's Night campaign, a citywide response to prevent arson that resulted in hundreds of fires around the Halloween period in the 1980s when the night before Halloween was referred to as "Devil's Night."

In a statement Sunday, city officials said seven of the fires were at houses, including one house that was vacant,, and the other fires were in trash bins, vehicles and a garage. The fires occurred

In the first 24 hours of the city’s three-day Angel’s Night campaign there were 14 fires reported across Detroit. During the same period last year, there were 17 fires. Last year was the quietest Angel's Night in 20 years, with 52 total fires.

Saturday's fire log wasn't atypical. In any 24-hour period, Detroit firefighters respond to an average of eight structure fires.

To cut down on the number of arson fires, more than 6,000 volunteers are patrolling the streets as part of the Angel's Night campaign, which stated Friday and continues through Monday.

Curfew hours remain in effect Sunday, meaning that juveniles 17 and youngr msut be off the streets from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, unless they can prove they are going to work or to an educational activity. Also, sales of gasoline and other fuels in containers are prohbited through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, except in emergency situations for those 18 years of age and older.
