Dog's Nose, Ears Ripped Off; $2.5K Reward Offered

"This animal deserves justice," the Michigan Humane Society said of a "brutally disfigured" dog now in its care.

DETROIT, MI — Michigan Humane Society got one of those calls Tuesday that animal rescue groups hope will never come and, when it does, causes them to question humanity: A “brutally disfigured” brown and tan rottweiler was found near Livernois and Warren avenues on Detroit’s southwest side. Most of the dog’s nose and ears had been torn off, Humane Society officials said.

The group is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whomever is responsible for the dog’s injuries, according to a news release. The Humane Society learned of the horrific condition of the dog from a citizen who saw the dog and could tell its wounds were severe.

The dog was taken to the Humane Society’s Mackey Center for Animal Care in Detroit, where a veterinarian assessed the dog’s injuries and took steps to make the animal more comfortable. The wounds appear to have been inflicted intentionally, said Mark Ramos, one of the Humane Society’s lead cruelty investigators.

“It appears that someone purposely maimed this poor dog, which has caused it a great deal of suffering,” Ramos said in the news release. “This kind of cruelty is unacceptable. We need to be a voice for these animals and as a community we need to speak through our strong actions to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Anyone with information about the person responsible for hurting the dog is asked to call the MHS hotline now at (313) 872-3401.
