-20 Wind Chills Across Detroit Area Friday

The National Weather Service​ has issued a cold weather advisory that will go into effect at 11 p.m. and last through noon Saturday.

Snow showers are likely across the Detroit area Friday as another blast of arctic air moves into the region, according to the National Weather Service.

The snow showers will continue through the morning hours with chances for snow squalls in the afternoon, the weather service said.

Forecasters expect up to 3 inches of fresh snow by Friday night. Areas south of Interstate 96 will see the highest accumulations.

Highs will reach the 30s Friday before very cold air moves in during the nighttime. Overnight lows will fall to as low as 5 degrees below zero with winds reaching up to 40 miles per hour. Temperatures will fall to as low as 20 degrees below zero with the wind, the weather service said.

Forecasters warned the cold air can cause frostbite and hypothermia on exposed skin within 30 minutes.

Temperatures will stay cold through the weekend before a slight warm-up early next week.
