2017 Ford Fireworks Over Detroit River: Where To Watch

You can watch the 2017 Ford Fireworks from traditional spots like Hart Plaza, a riverboat, rooftops, parks and private businesses.

DETROIT, MI — For years, Metro Detroit families have kicked off Independence Day celebrations with the Ford Fireworks, a stunning display over the Detroit River that takes place this year on June 26. The show starts at 9:48 p.m.

More than 10,000 pyrotechnic fireworks are shot off from three barges on the Detroit River. The big party includes music, singing competitions and other events. The theme of this year’s extravaganza is “Detroit! Right Now!” to capture the excitement and energy of Detroit’s renaissance.

The show will be choreographed by Patrick Brault, the president of Sirius Pyrotechnics who brings 25 years experience illuminating the world’s skies, including displays at past Olympics ceremonies.

Admission is free, but get there early, no matter where you’re headed to watch because traffic into downtown will be heavy. Some streets will be closed, but there will be plenty of parking spaces in the area. Or, you may want to consider avoiding the traffic by parking farther out and taking the QLine into downtown.

The best viewing spot is Hart Plaza, the center of all the action. Some other good spots — all free — include the Spirit of Detroit Plaza at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, Belle Isle Park ad Mount Elliott Park Plaza and West Riverfront Park.

The Center Parking Garage Rooftop Party, a paid event, is another option, but it will cost you.
