HAMTRAMCK, MI — A Detroit man is facing charges after kidnapping a teen girl at gunpoint from her bus stop Monday morning in Hamtramck, according to prosecutors.
Donald Fields, 48, was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, felonious assault, five counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony, and a count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
He was placed in jail without bond. His next court date is scheduled for April 30.
He faces up to life in prison for the kidnapping and sexual assault charges.
Prosecutors said the 16-year-old girl was waiting for the school bus in the area of Edwin and Brombach streets in Hamtramck on Monday when Fields approached her.
He placed something at her back and forced her into the back of his van and drove away, prosecutors said.
He also sexually assaulted the girl inside the van, prosecutors said.
The teen did call 911 at 7:09 a.m. and officers went to the intersection where she was taken, prosecutors said.
The officers then went to the teen's school, Frontier International Academy, where they learned several students were tracking her location on their cell phones and apps, prosecutors said.
Fields drove the girl to a Sunoco gas station at the corner of Conant and Nevada where he took her inside to buy cigarettes, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said that's when the girl signaled to the clerk that she was in danger.
The clerk immediately came to her aid and forced Fields into the parking lot where he was met by officers, prosecutors said.
Officers then arrested Fields, confiscated his gun and towed away his van, prosecutors said.
"Our young survivor in this case was simply walking in broad daylight when she was viciously attacked and sexually assaulted. Despite what she had just gone through, her quick thinking and mental toughness saved her life. We cannot reverse what happened to her, but we can work hard to bring justice to her," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said.
Hamtramck Police Chief Hussein Farhat said the incident was random and that Fields has a criminal history of sexual assault charges.
