ROYAL OAK, MI — A baby girl gorilla was born last Sunday at the Detroit Zoo, making her just the second gorilla ever born at the zoo.
Zoo officials said the new western lowland gorilla was born at the zoo to mom Tulivu and silverback Mshindi.
Officials called the birth a meaningful milestone for a critically endangered species, and part of the Gorilla Species Survival Plan working to protect western lowland gorillas.
The baby girl does not have a name yet.
"Tulivu and her baby are doing well, with mom already showing incredible maternal care as the little one reaches important early milestones," zoo officials said.
Mom and baby will spend a few days bonding behind the scenes so animal care and veterinary teams keep a close eye on the growing family, zoo officials said.
