DETROIT — Firefighters fully extinguished a large mulch fire in Detroit Friday after battling the blaze for several days, according to officials.

Officials said the blaze broke out Tuesday afternoon at a storage yard at 14300 Prairie Street, near Davison and Lyndon streets.

At one point, the blaze reached up to 20 feet high and was spread over nearly 500 yards, according to officials.

Air quality in the area reached "moderate" levels.

As of Friday afternoon, air quality in the area slightly improved, but was still in the "moderate" category.

Fire officials are still trying to determine the cause of the fire, but they said spontaneous combustion can happen as the mulch generates heat as it breaks down.

Officials did not report any injuries.
