Detroit Police Chief James White may be stepping down​ to pursue another career path, according to multiple news reports.​

DETROIT — Detroit Police Chief James White may be stepping down to pursue another career path, according to multiple news reports.

White, who is a licensed mental health therapist, said Wednesday he has applied for the CEO position at the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network, according to news reports.

"It’s an extremely important role at a critical time for Detroit and Wayne County. We continue to have a mental health crisis in our community that needs to be addressed at multiple levels," White said in a statement.

The health network and non-profit says it serves about 123,000 children and adults in Detroit and Wayne County, according to its website.

The network focuses on those "with serious mental illness, children with serious emotional disturbance, people with autism, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and those with substance use disorder."

White was appointed interim chief on June 1, 2021 after former Detroit Police Chief James Craig retired from the position. He was confirmed by Detroit City Council on Sept. 21, 2021.

White served as assistant chief from 2012 until August 2020, when he left to head the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.

Overall, White has been with the Detroit Police force for 26 years.
