Detroit Schools Performing Lowest In Nation, Supt. Vows Change

Detroit students' performance is the poorest in the nation, again, according to national exam results released Tuesday.

DETROIT, MI — Detroit students’ performance is the poorest in the nation, again, with test schools remaining as low as the last time national exams were administered, according to a media report. Detroit Public Schools Supt. Nikolai Vitti vowed improvement was coming to the district and said Detroit students remain at a disadvantage. Students scored lowest among urban districts and in fourth- and eighth-grade reading and math.

Vitti told the Detroit Free Press that the results for the state's largest district aren't a reflection of the talent or potential of students.

"Instead, they are indicative of a school system that has not implemented best practices regarding curriculum, instruction, academic intervention and school improvement for over a decade,” he told the newspaper.

The results were from the 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress, an exam taken by a representative sample of students across each state, and were released Tuesday. The results show state-by-state performance and data from over 20 large, urban districts like Detroit, the report said. See more on NAEP here.
