Education Secretary Betsy DeVos Confirmation: Reaction on Social Media
The western Michigan school choice advocate's confirmation was met with cheers and jeers on social media.
Michigan’s Betsy DeVos was confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Education Tuesday in an unprecedented 50-50 split, with Vice President Mike Pence breaking the tie — something his predecessor, Joe Biden, was never forced to do in the eight years of the Obama White House.
President Donald Trump has praised DeVos as a reformer who will take on special interests. Critics, however, question DeVos’ lack of experience with public education, and worry that the billionaire Republican operative will advocate for school choice at the expense of the nation’s public schools.
The vote on her confirmation reveals a deep division in American politics that was reflected in social media posts.

Appointing #BetsyDeVos is like saying, "My mechanic hasn't done as great a job with my car as I'd like. I think I'll take it to a butcher."

Today's math lesson from the #BetsyDeVos confirmation—you can’t divide two spines between 52 GOP Senators.

Dear #BetsyDeVos, I want to teach, but I have zero experience and no qualifications. Please contact me. I look forward to working with you.
