Grand Hotel and its over 150 varieties of flowers and 25 gardens have been included in the list of the Top 25 Most Magnificent Gardens by Historic Hotels of America. Grand Hotel has been a member of Historic Hotels of America since 2001.
“Our beautiful flower beds and awe-inspiring landscapes feature tulips, geraniums, and lilacs, but also include roses, peonies, lilies, cosmos, coleus, daisies, among many others that are iconic to Grand Hotel and Mackinac Island,” said Dan Musser III, President and owner of Grand Hotel. “My sister, Mimi Cunningham, is truly the inspiration behind the design and overall look and feel of the gardens that our guests can enjoy while visiting and experience something new with every season. We take particular pride in the time and care that’s taken in selecting and maintaining our flowers and we’re very honored to be recognized alongside some of the most historic hotels in the country.”
There are 25 gardens with over 150 flower varieties on Grand Hotel’s property, totaling 35,280 square feet. Over 1,375 Red Americana Geraniums are spread across 147 planting boxes and line the world’s longest front porch at the entrance of Grand Hotel. In total, Grand Hotel has more than 2,500 geraniums on the grounds. One of the most recognizable locations on hotel grounds is the roadside triangle gardens that feature 16,000 tulips and bloom in radiant colors signifying another season at Grand Hotel. The 2018 garden bed material alone features over 50,000 annuals and 60,000 flower bulbs planted in the fall.

The Top 25 Most Magnificent Gardens list is assembled by Historic Hotels of America and includes hotels registered under the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Each hotel is selected based on list of nominations from all member hotels. Responses are then evaluated based on which hotels fit best into each category. The result is a list of hotels all over the country that offer breathtaking views of a variety of flora and fauna that must be experienced in person. The gardens range from grand estate size formal gardens to fields of seasonal colors and humble herb gardens.
