Oakland & Macomb's 9th District: 2016 Midterm Results

Here's how Oakland and Macomb counties voted in Tuesday's election.

The results are in and Andy Levin has won his father's U.S. House seat. The majority of Michigan’s 9th District voters cast ballots in favor of Levin over Republican challenger Candius Stearns.

According to projections from the Associated Press, Oakland and Macomb neighborhoods within the 9th District, incoming Senator Levin led Stearns 58 percent to 38 percent.

The southeastern Michigan district has long been held by Democrat Sander Levin, first elected in 1982. In December of 2017, incumbent Senator Sander Levin announced he would not seek reelection. Incoming representative Andy Levin is Congressman Sandy Levin’s son, and former Senator Carl Levin’s nephew.

Levin will represent the 9th Congressional District, including the cities of Ferndale, Oak Park, Royal Oak, Hazel Park, St.Clair Shores, Warren, Bloomfield, and Sterling Heights.

The win aligns with August midterms, where Levin had rallied 49,469 votes, or 52 percent of the democratic candidacy votes, edging out Democratic opponent Ellen Lipton’s 39,900 votes, and Republican candidate Stearns’ 47,332 midterm totals.

Andy Levin ran once before a state Senate seat in 2006. Levin has held positions within Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth and lead trade worker training for the state. Prior to running for office in 2018, he was the president and founder of Levin Energy Partners.

Candidate Levin received endorsements from United Auto Workers, Teamsters, Service Employees International Union, and former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm.

Candidate Candius Stearns was one of three Republican women running in 2016 for the U.S. House in Michigan. The Sterling Heights resident and small business owner was endorsed by the Republican Women’s Federation of Michigan, Right to Life Michigan, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, and former U.S. Representative for Michigan's 10th congressional district Candice Miller.
