Trump Coming To Michigan: 5 Things To Know

From the message he's sending media to the planned protests outside, here's what you need to know about Trump's visit this weekend.

President Donald Trump is skipping a big night in Washington D.C. to spend time with his Michigan supporters this weekend. Here are the five things you need to know about his visit.

1. The basics.

Trump is hosting a campaign-style rally on Saturday. It kicks off at 7 p.m. at Total Sports Park, located at 65665 Powell Rd., Washington, in northern Macomb County (check out the map down below). If you’re going, doors open at 4 p.m. If you’re looking to register for tickets, click here.

2. There will be protests.

Organizers of the "Protest Trump: No Hate In Our State" Facebook group are calling for a protest outside Total Sports Park.

"Trump is coming to Michigan. Macomb County is once again being targeted as the GOP turning point for Michigan. We all will be showing up in demonstration that most in our state do NOT support the Trump agenda. All decent people regardless of political affiliation have reason to attend and speak out with a unifying voice: NO HATE IN OUR STATE!" the group said.

BAMN (The Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration & Immigrant Rights, and Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary) also is organizing a protest outside the rally titled "Shut Down Trump in Michigan! Trump must resign or be removed!

3. This is Trump’s second time since being elected that he’s visited Michigan.

He attended an event in Ypsilanti Township in March 2017, where he talked about revisiting fuel standards for vehicles and renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement. But, he’s rallied his supporters here plenty of times. According to the Free Press, Saturday's event will be the 11th rally Trump has held in Michigan and the fifth rally in metro Detroit since first announcing his run for president in June 2015.

4. He’s got a following in Macomb County.

He received 54 percent of the vote in Macomb County in the General Election, with supporters helping him become the first Republican presidential candidate to win in the state since 1988. In 2016 he held a rally at the Macomb Community College campus in Warren, where several thousand people attended and hundreds more were turned away at the doors because the venue was filled to capacity, WDIV reported.

5. Trump is skipping out on the White House Correspondents Dinner. Again.

The White House Correspondents' Association is an organization of journalists who cover the White House and POTUS. Each year they host an event traditionally attended by the president (since 1924) with media, local dignitaries and celebrities. With Trump known to attack media, that’s not something he’s interested in. Michael Glassner, chief operating officer of Donald J. Trump for President, Inc., said this in a news release:

"While the fake news media will be celebrating themselves with the denizens of Washington society in the swamp that evening, President Trump will be in a completely different Washington, celebrating our national economic revival with patriotic Americans."

Trump didn’t go in 2017 either. Instead, he held a similar type of rally in Harrisburg, Pa. He told them he’d rather be with “regular people,” Bloomberg reported.
