U2 Picks Detroit To Kick Off Joshua Tree Tour’s Second Leg
The original Joshua Tree U.S. stadium tour propelled U2 and Bono to international stardom — and it started in Metro Detroit.

DETROIT, MI — U2 will bring The Joshua Tree Tour to Detroit in a Sept. 3 Labor Day weekend show at Ford Field, promoters said Tuesday. The tour commemorates the 30-year anniversary of the seminal 1987 album that propelled Bono and U2 to international fame.
Detroit is an appropriate place for U2 to kick off the second leg of the tour. U2 made its first U.S. appearance as a stadium show headline act at the Pontiac Silverdome in April 1987. The concert was part of the original Joshua Tree Tour.
Ticket prices start at $35 and go on sale June 12. Pre-sale dates for U2.com subscribers begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 8. U2 last visited Metro Detroit for a two-night stand at The Palace at Auburn Hills on Oct. 24-25, 2015. U2 brought its 360 Tour to East Lansing’s Spartan Stadium in June 2011. Before its skyrocket to fame, U2 played Detroit twice — once at the Joe Louis Arena in 1985 and, before that, at Fox Theatre in 1984.
The current Joshua Tree Tour began in Vancouver, British Columbia, in May, and Detroit wasn’t among the cities on the stop. Detroit kicks off a second leg that includes 12 more shows in North and South America.
