City vs. Village Issue -- BE SURE YOU HAVE THE REAL ANSWERS!

The group to support the city charter isn't providing all the details in their information. We, the residents of Dexter, deserve to know.

There is a meeting on Saturday, Nov. 1 from 10-12 at the Library to ask questions about the Village vs. City issue. If you can possibly attend, please do. I was going to vote for cityhood, I mean, if I don’t have to deal with two entities to work on my house AND my taxes are going down, why not, right?

Over the weekend I had an interesting conversation with a woman while I was set up at the Farmer’s Market. What she said caused me to question some of the points that I’ve read regarding our taxes. So, on Monday I called the Village Treasurer, Marie, and left her a voicemail with my questions. She called me back (a voicemail) and answered my questions, which in turn caused more questions. I again left her a voicemail and she was able to reach me on Tuesday to answer my questions. To state this simply, her answers changed my vote. Some important details have been left out of the information posted by the “Support the City Charter” people, which begs the question, how much more has been left out? Yesterday we received a postcard in the mail from this group that states “FREEDOM FROM SCIO/WEBSTER TAXES”. That is actually NOT true. There is a debt owed to Webster for 12 more years. This debt is the responsibility of ONE subdivision here in Dexter. If we become a city, this debt will now be absorbed by ALL residents. I have never had to pay Webster taxes (I live in Scio Twp.), but I will have to help pay this debt. Also, the statement gives the impression that your taxes may go down greatly because you don’t have Scio or Webster taxes anymore. Also NOT true. You will still be paying those taxes, but directly to Dexter.

This is an extremely important issue, one we can’t take back next election. If you care at all about Dexter’s future, be sure ALL your questions are answered. When I spoke with Marie, she was very honest when answering my questions, which I very much appreciated. However her answers changed the way I thought.

If possible, bring your questions to the Library this Saturday from 10-12. Let’s all talk this out and be sure we are making informed decisions.

Please share this information and encourage EVERYONE to get all the answers and make an informed decision on Tuesday. Then, be sure you get out there and VOTE! Every single one is important and counts.
