Civil War History Comes Alive at Dexter's Gordon Hall

Festival reenactments include military life, encampments during the 1860s.

The grounds of Gordon Hall came alive Saturday as visitors across Michigan descended on Dexter for the Dexter Area Historical Society’s celebration.

The event, which featured military encampments, musical performances and demonstrations of life in the 1860s, was a fitting tribute for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

“We’re providing a snapshot of Michigan in 1861, when President Abraham Lincoln called for 75,000 troops and the Michigan 4th Infantry began mustering volunteers,” event chairwoman Donna Fisher said.

Fisher said she was impressed with the turnout for Saturday’s festivities.

“I am thrilled to see so many smiling faces,” she said. “We wanted to put on an event that was both historical and affordable and I think we’ve done that.”

In addition to honoring the lives lost in the Civil War, Dettling said the event was also a fundraiser and springboard to draw public interest back into Gordon Hall.

“Gordon Hall belongs to everyone,” Fisher said. “I envision the grounds as a place families come to have picnics outdoors or an area for community events.”

She said the historical society still owes roughly $300,000 on its $1.5 million mortgage for the property.

Dexter resident Paul Bishop commended the historical society volunteers for their efforts.

“I think they put together a great program,” he said. “We have some wonderful volunteer participation.”

Tom and Kim Jacobson of Saline, who were driving through Dexter, stopped at the event to talk with authors Kim Crawford and Marty Bertera.

“I really appreciate the authenticity,” Tom Jacobson said.

Civil War Days continues on Sunday. For a complete schedule of events, visit the historical society's website.
