Dexter Drama Presents Martians Over Brooklyn

The Martians are coming! The Martians are coming! Look out, Dexter Drama Club is proud to present Martians Over Brooklyn! Set in Brooklyn, New York at the end of the Great Depression, this unforgettable show follows the true events in which people all across the nation were stricken with panic after hearing a radio broadcast of Orson Welles’s War of the Worlds, mistaking it for a real alien invasion!  Featuring a cast of characters that include the Bonacelli family complete with their quirky grandfather played by senior James Fischer, an array of odd neighbors, a Los Angeles actress, and some tough New York cab drivers, this humorous show cannot be missed!

Onstage one can see actors from the radio station, including Orson Welles himself, played by senior Tyrus Caldwell, to those in the neighborhood facing the terror that aliens have come to destroy life as they know it. Caldwell comments on performing a live radio show, as well as actual excerpts from the original broadcast, “Acting as Orson Welles in Martians Over Brooklyn has definitely been my most unique acting experience and it’s a lot of fun. When I see all the conflicts happening in the streets of Brooklyn, it’s cool knowing that it’s all my fault. Playing a character so charismatic and influential never has a dull moment.”

The cast and crew also features several students from Dexter’s foreign exchange programs.  Alberta Milotta, who plays Ms. Miranda, comments on performing in United States, “In Italy, there are not many drama programs and you have to search around for them. Even though it’s difficult to memorize lines because I have to be able to recite them in English, I love being a part of the drama family.” Seeing these wonderful and diverse characters as well as the performers who portray them is a once in a lifetime opportunity and is showing for one weekend only.

The show is directed by Ms. Tomi Dres with assistance from Ms. Erin Palmer as the technical director. Martians Over Brooklyn premieres Thursday, October 24th at 7pm, with two more shows at 7pm on the 25th and 26th. There will be a matinee performance on October 27th beginning at 2pm. Tickets are $8 for students/seniors and $10 for adults.

Come out to see the end of the world before the aliens get you!
