Dexter Girls' Soccer Opens District Play With A 5-0 Win Against Tecumseh

The Dreadnaughts will face Ypsilanti on Thursday in district playoffs.

By Alex Hardie

The Dexter High School girls' soccer team were held to one goal in the first half by a well organized Tecumseh defense on May 29, but it couldn’t last the whole game.

The Tecumseh Indians held on for a one-goal deficit at half-time after it took about 30 minutes for the Dreads to score. Against a very well organized defense consisting of 10 players, Dexter’s Emily Tarnaski intercepted a pass out from the Indian defense and fired a firm shot from 22 yards out into the upper corner of the goal. Just past the midway point in the second half, Olivia Vollmers volleyed a cross in by Nicole Lucas.

Less than a minute later, the Dreadnaughts would go up 3-0 when Lucas took a pass from Lindsey Lloyd and half volleyed it in over the onrushing keeper. With just over seven minutes left in the game, Kaitlin Kivi ran onto a ball that ricocheted off of the post to make it 4-0. Kivi then assisted on Bethany Shiguango’s goal when she played a ball wide to Bethany, who shot it to the far post in the upper corner of the goal. Keeper Sarah Silvasi got her significant touches on the ball with a couple of back passes, saves and some goal-kicks. She had her 13th shut-out of the season, forced to make two saves on the night.

“I am pleased with how patient we were in the first half playing against numbers in their third of the field. We had some good chances in the first half but didn’t finish," coach Scott Forrester said. "In the second half, the adjustments the team came up with allowed greater creativity, which made for some goals.

“You must give Tecumseh a lot of credit, they had a good game plan which challenged us. The problem for them is that our players love challenges!”

The Dreadnaughts play at Tecumseh at 7 p.m. Thursday against Ypsilanti. In the earlier semifinal, Chelsea will take on Milan.
