Dexter Residents Participate in Detroit Marathon
More than 20,000 runners took to the streets in downtown Detroit on Sunday for the 34th annual marathon.

It was a day of personal achievements for several Dexter residents, who were among the estimated 20,000 runners, walkers and cyclists participating in Sunday's 34th annual Detroit Free Press Marathon.
Corey Nowitzke, 27 of Dexter, finished the half-marathon in first place with a time of 1:10:33. Laura McKenzie and Liz Aslin both of Dexter also completed the full marathon.
"Today we witnessed one of the most spectacular events in running that we have seen in quite some time," cross country coach Katie Jazwinski said. "One year ago, we thought (Laura and Liz) might have been able to accomplish the half marathon but today they completed the full 26.2 miles. And, as a coach and athlete I was so proud to see them come over the hill at the 25-mile mark.

"They probably had the biggest cheering section with the largest fan club at the marathon. We enjoy it when our middle school and high school runners have success. But, we find greater pride and accomplishment in these mothers that set a crazy goal back in the middle of June and set their minds that they were going to finish this feat."
