Dexter's Drew Barnes Places Fourth in MHSAA State Wrestling Finals
Barnes was among three Dexter wrestlers in the state tournament, but was the only one who made All-State.
AUBURN HILLS – Dexter's Drew Barnes stumbled in the semifinals of the MHSAA individual wrestling tournament, but then went on to win his final two bouts to place fourth in the state at the 160-pound weight class.
Barnes won the opening and quarterfinal bouts by decision over Charles Procter of Bay City Western and Thomas Houston of Lansing Waverly. Then he came up against Jordan Wohlfert of St. Johns, the eventual state champion. That matched ended in a 29-12 technical fall.
In his quarterfinal match with Houston, Barnes hit a takedown in each of the first two rounds and he maintained control for most of the match.
"That's when he's at his best, when he gets out to an early lead," Dreadnaughts coach Greg Wagner said. "He likes to get in a rhythm and if you start slow you tend to waste a lot of time."
Barnes wrestled in the state finals last year in the 152-pound bracket and finished in fourth place.
Barnes was one of three Dexter wrestlers at the state tournament.

Senior Shawn Chamberlain, wrestling in the 285 weight class, won his first bout against Tom Stackpole of Trenton, but then lost his next two matches and was out of the double-elimination tournament.
Sophomore Zeke Breuninger lost two in a row, and was done Friday morning.
