Dexter's Curves for Women Can Help You Reach Your Fitness Goals

In my last blog, I shared information about Take Off Pounds Sensibly of Dexter which is an inexpensive option for important support during your weight loss journey. This time I’d like to tell you about the enjoyable experiences I’ve had at the Dexter Curves since joining in 2004.

What I love most about the Curves circuit, is the woman-sized machines that help build muscle strength. You’re not going to see the intimating and bulky machines like other work out facilities. Each machine is worked for 30 seconds with a recovery station in between before moving onto the next machine.

Now this might sound boring but Curves strives to add variety to change up the workouts so monotony isn’t a problem. For instance, there are also toning classes and, for an additional small fee, you can attend a Curves Zumba class.

To add even more of a challenge, personal trainer Jillian Michaels has joined Curves as a spokesperson. Jillian has revamped the Curves workout by introducing interval training between each machine. Instead of jogging on a recovery station, we now are challenged with push-ups, jumping jacks, standing crunches and many other exercises that will change from month to month. Best of all, this is included in your monthly membership fee.

Over the years as a Curves member, I’ve also enjoyed the camaraderie and support from other members as well as the club’s co-owner, Leslie Harrison.

Leslie is very motivated and creative. She always challenges us with support and enjoyable competitions. For example, before the holidays began, she encouraged us to challenge ourselves by keeping our weight in check during a time when it’s difficult to resist all the Christmas goodies. If we either lost weight or maintained, there was a special reward.

In these last 10 years, I’ve worked out at Curves more the 1,200 times. With the Curves Smart system, I know that each of my work outs averages 200 calories burned. So if one needs to consume 3,500 calories to gain a pound that means I’ve managed to keep off about 68 pounds.

Now while it’s probably not likely I would have gained that much (at least I hope not), I have to admit regular exercise not only helps prevent weight gain, it’s just good for me in general.

I feel that my years of exercise have really paid off. I’m in better shape now at 60 than I was 10 years ago, I’ve actually increased my bone density, and I can get on the floor and play with my twin 15-month-old granddaughters. And just as important, I can get back up again.

To try a free week at the Dexter Curves, please call co-owner/manager Leslie Harrison at 734-426-3635. Curves is located at 7200 Dan Hoey Road, Suite A, Dexter, MI 48130.
