ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Unleash your superpowers for Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan! Mark your calendars for the third annual Superhero 5k presented by Door to Door Organics on Sunday, October 25th. Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan is a local nonprofit organization that promotes self-respect and healthy lifestyles to preteen girls. The Superhero 5k benefits their scholarship program and will take place at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter. It will be an afternoon filled with costumes and contests for the whole family you won’t want to miss!
The Superhero 5k consists of a 1-mile and 5k run/walk along the park’s trails. All 5k finishers receive a multicolored Superhero 5k medal and the male and female winners of the 5k run will receive a gift certificate for a pair of running shoes from Ann Arbor Running Company! Participants in the 1-mile run will receive a finisher’s ribbon. Children 5 years and younger can enjoy the Kids’ Dash; they receive a Superhero toy duck as they cross the finish line. NEW for 2015: our youngest superhero runners will be first in the lineup at 2:20 pm! There are over 20 prizes from local businesses for winners of the costume contest so make sure to come dressed as your favorite superhero!

“I have watched my daughter develop through these events. She wasn’t even a year old at the first Superhero 5K and rode in her stroller for nearly all of it. The very next year she ran almost 2 miles all by herself! The look of sheer joy on her face as the crowds of people cheered her on nearly brought me to tears, and I am certain have lead to her love of running. I can’t wait to see how far she makes it this year. The Superhero 5K has become a much anticipated event in my family, and I am proud to be a part of it,” said Hilton Elementary coach and two year 5k participant Lacy Hutting.
In 2015, Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan’s scholarship fund provided financial assistance for 42% of the 1,871 program participants. Girls on the Run’s goal is to make their program accessible to all the girls on our community. The Superhero 5k and its’ online fundraising drive serve as critical campaigns in achieving this goal. Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan serves five counties: Washtenaw, Livingston, Lenawee, Monroe, and Jackson.
“Girls on the Run is more than a running program. We are a curriculum based program that changes lives. How do we know? We see it happen every season. It’s the light of recognition within each girl as she starts to understand and activate her limitless potential. It’s on the face of every girl who crosses the finish line of our celebratory 5k with a memory of accomplishment she’ll have for a lifetime. Girls’ families see it in girls that are more joyful, healthy and confident. Their teachers see it in girls that are willing to share their thoughts or stand up for themselves and others. The transformation is unmistakable. And you can help play a role by signing up to be a superhero on October 25 or simply making a donation to our local scholarship fund,” said Danielle Plunkett, Executive Director of Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan.
