Hamburg Youth Football Assocation Raises $10,000 for Dexter Relief Fund

The Dexter Relief Fund got a big boost of support Monday as members of the Hamburg Pirate Youth Football Association donated $10,000 to help with clean-up efforts in the community.

Student athletes Peyton Bennett, Josh Smithpeters and James Pearce presented Matt LaFontaine, general manager of , with a check at the Dexter Village Council meeting.

“This is a great thing you guys did,” LaFontaine said addressing the athletes.

Volunteers raised the money during the association’s two-day bottle and can drive March 16-17, according to the association’s registrar Tim McDonald. 

“Our association wanted to do something to help our friends here in Dexter,” McDonald said.

He said volunteers collected and returned 28,000 bottles and cans.

“We spent a lot of time in front of the bottle machines," McDonald said.

According to LaFontaine, the Dexter Relief Fund total is now at approximately $125,000, thanks to the generosity of hundreds of donors.

In other council news:

• Washtenaw County Commissioner Rob Turner attended the meeting to offer his and the county’s continued support of Dexter. “I am here to say you guys have done a wonderful job,” he said.
• There will be an informational meeting about the Main Street road resurfacing project Thursday at 7 p.m. at the . The project is scheduled to begin in April.
• Dexter Area Fire Department board member Jim Seta said the department is interviewing candidates to fill one full-time firefighter position. Seta also said the department is moving forward with the purchase of a new pumper truck in the amount of $369,000, which will be paid in five annual installments of approximately $78,000.
