Jogger Killed in Hit and Run Accident Near Dexter

A 70-year-old Dexter man was killed Thursday near Marshall and Baker roads when an SUV struck him from behind while jogging, the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department said in a press release.
According to Sgt. Beth Gieske, sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 11:30 p.m. after receiving calls from motorists in the area who discovered the man lying in a ditch along the roadway.
"During their investigation it was determined the decedent had been jogging on the side of the road when he was struck from behind by a SUV, and thrown into the ditch," Gieske said.

According to police reports, the driver of the SUV fled the scene of the accident and returned a short time later. Investigators conducted interviews with the driver and determined alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
Gieske said the driver was taken to the Washtenaw County Jail. The case remains under investigation. There is no further information at the time of this posting.
