Lady Dreads Drop Season Ending Loss to Ann Arbor

Pioneers defeat Dexter with close 45-41 game on Friday.

’s girls varsity basketball team lost to host Ann Arbor Pioneer 45-41 in Friday’s Class A district final. With the loss, the Dreadnaughts concluded their season.

In the first quarter, Dexter raced out to an 11-6 lead on consecutive baskets by senior guard Serena Bidwell.

In the second quarter, the Dreadnaughts opened up a 7-point lead as junior forward Polly Washabaugh scored on an inside basket increasing Dexter’s advantage to 15-8 with 5:10 remaining in the first half.

The Pioneers, however, would go on a 7-2 run to close out the second quarter as forward Maya Richmond scored 4 points.

In the third quarter, Richmond continued her torrid scoring streak, netting 5 consecutive points and increasing Ann Arbor’s advantage to 22-17 with 7:13 left in the frame.

Dreadnaught sophomore guard Riley McDonald scored a basket, followed by senior forward Nyki Caldwell’s 2 points, bringing Dexter to within 1 point at 27-26 with 2:10 remaining in the third quarter.

The Dreadnaughts finished the third quarter on a 7-1 run to lead 33-30 entering the fourth quarter. For Dexter, sophomore center Emma Kill scored 5 points in the run to pace the Dreads.

To begin the fourth quarter, Kill scored an inside bucket, giving Dexter a 35-30 lead with 6:58 left on the clock.

The Pioneers, however, went on a run of their own, outscoring the Dreadnaughts 9-3 as Brittany Kaplan drained a 3-pointer, giving Ann Arbor a 39-36 lead with 4:22 left in the game.

Kamilah Carter followed Kaplan’s triple with a drive and basket for a 41-36 Pioneer lead. With Carter’s basket, Ann Arbor concluded an 11-3 halfway through the fourth quarter. Dexter senior Zaryn Jennings made two free throws, bringing  the Dreadnaughts closer at 44-40 with 1:11 remaining in the contest.

With 31 seconds left in the game, Dreadnaught junior center Olivia Cares hit one free throw for the night’s final 45-41 margin.

Kill led Dexter with 12 points, while Bidwell had 9 points, and Jennings and Cares each netted 5 points.

Sophomore forward Olivia Vollmers had 4 points, while McDonald, Caldwell and Washabaugh each had 2 points for the Dreadnaughts.

Emma Brann, Carter and Richmond each scored 11 points for Pioneer, while Megan Schectman had 7 points.

Kaplan finished with 3 points, while Daniesha Scott had 2 points for Ann Arbor.
