Lighthouse Café Scheduled to Close Sunday

After more than 12 years, the Dexter restaurant is calling it quits.

The , for years one of Dexter’s most popular eateries, is going out of business Sunday. Owners Steve and Sandi Varney are closing the restaurant after nearly 13 years of serving Dexter and the surrounding community. The restaurant is the to close its doors this month.

The couple cites the downturn in the economy as well as the establishment of other similar-type restaurants in the area as reasons for their decrease in business.

“We haven’t made money in a year and a half.  We kept dreaming it would get better, but it never did. Our overhead was too high,” Sandi Varney said.

The Varneys have been running the restaurant with almost no staff for about six weeks.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel for the Varneys, however. They also own The Varney Catering Company, which they established with The Lighthouse in 1998.  Their specialty is whole-roasted hog, but they also prepare everything from beef Wellington, brisket, ribs and chicken to hot dogs.

"No party is too large to cater," Varney said.

Varney said what she has enjoyed the most about serving Dexter is the customers, many of whom have become friends and who attend church with them. Varney said she loves Dexter because it is still a "small town."
