My First Yoga Class

All of a sudden, my right leg was longer than my left leg. It felt like it was a lot longer. If I could have, I would have gotten out a ruler to see just how much longer it was.

It was the result of supta padangustasana. The yoga pose where, while on your back, one leg is up in the air and the foot held with a strap (or, if you can do the final pose, with your hand), while the other leg is left on the floor. It was my first yoga class, and might have been the first yoga pose of my life, an intro class, free, given at the Ann Arbor YMCA to introduce people to yoga. As a very beginner looking for something to help ease some of my physical aches, I found it fascinating to have this drastic affect of the pose happen to my body.

A bigger surprise came at the end of class when the teacher led us through savasana, the quiet, guided relaxation portion of the class. For the first time that I could remember, my mind was quiet. The chatter, seemingly constant, was gone.

Although I don’t remember what else we did in that class, I remember one leg feeling longer than the other and the serenity of the final pose of the class. In that moment, I was sold. I’ve been taking yoga ever since and likely won’t ever quit. My yoga practice has continued over the years for various reasons, but they are all a variation on the same two themes: physically there is an affect that makes me feel better and the practice of yoga helps quiet the chatter in my mind.

Why not come to the free yoga class at The Yoga Space on Friday, January 31 from 6-7 PM and find out if your leg feels longer after supta padangustasana? I’d love to see you there!
