September marks the beginning of a new session of classes at the Yoga Space. Our studio typically goes on break for the last few weeks of August, and once Labor Day arrives there’s a flush of new energy and excitement at the studio as classes resume. It’s a festive reunion for both students and teachers, and it feels great to get back into the studio and do yoga with others who share a passion for the practice.
In these past few weeks, I’ve been struck by the number and variety of comments made by students about how and where they practiced yoga over the summer break. It is always heartening for a teacher to know that students are inspired to practice. It’s also fun to discover just how creative and resourceful students are in practicing yoga outside the studio. It should be no surprise, since in the Iyengar method of yoga students are taught to make good use of whatever space and props are available to achieve optimum benefits in a pose.
One student shared her tips on airplane yoga… poses she found she could actually do during flight without invading her neighbor’s space. Another listed a number of poses she practiced on a trip where the only prop she was able to pack was a yoga strap. Someone recounted the fun of practicing yoga on the beach, another mentioned using mini yoga-practice breaks during long hours of summer gardening. I found myself adding to the list, and marveling at how many ways yoga can help us to live and work with greater ease and vitality. As so many students discovered in their various pursuits this summer, yoga is accessible and practical just about anywhere, and is equally effective and powerful an art… inside the studio or out.
