Power Outage Closes Dexter District Library, Local Businesses

DTE spokesman Scott Simons said the power restoration process might take through the weekend.

Power is now out for more than 1,725 DTE customers in Dexter after powerful storms whipped through the area Wednesday evening.

The power outage has forced several businesses and organizations in Dexter to close.

"It's a forced work from home day. No power at the office," Erin Paup, office manager for in downtown Dexter wrote on her Facebook wall Thursday morning.

Other businesses without power include the , , , and .

Power was also out at the , the Dexter Village Offices, and the Dexter American Legion Hall as of 1 p.m.

An estimated restoration time is not yet available.

Doug Marrin, owner of , one of the only businesses in town with power, said he's seen a small uptick in customers throughout the day.

"We're open and we're ready to serve anyone that comes in," he said.

Alpha Coney Island on Dexter-Ann Arbor Road was also open as of 2 p.m. Other businesses open include , , , Country Market, and .

DTE spokesman Scott Simons said 190,000 customers were without power in southeast Michigan Thursday morning.

"This is the fourth storm we've had since Tuesday morning, so we have to keep reassessing priorities," he said. "But, we do know the restoration process will take us into the weekend."

Simons said the utility had reduced the outage number from Tuesday's storms to 17,000 before a Wednesday evening storm hit, followed by what DTE experienced as the most severe storm of the week overnight.

DTE has recalled 100 linemen who were sent to Ohio to help with repairs after storms there last week and expects to have a power restoration estimate later today. Customers can download a smartphone application in iTunes or Android Market, or visit dteenergy.com to get more specific information.

According to Dexter Patch readers, the following locations have power restored:

  • Resident Brandi Spring reports that power has been restored in at least part of Walkabout Creek.
  • Resident Mark Olexa reports that power has been restored to the area near Third and Dover streets.
  • Sylvia Keough reports that all residents in Glen Devon, Joy and Webster Church have power.
