St. Andrew's Ice Cream Social
Ice Cream Socials are a popular event in the summer and particularly in the local Washtenaw County churches with German roots. St. Andrew's in Dexter (originally called the German Lutheran Church) began holding Ice Cream Socials back in the 1930's. They consisted of ice cream sundaes such as a Tin Roof (chocolate and peanuts over ice cream) to the huge banana splits and always served with cake which was free if you bought ice cream.
Today an Ice Cream Social includes a full summer meal. At St. Andrew's you will find sandwiches including Hot Dogs, Bratwursts, Sloppy Joe's, and Pulled Pork along with accompaniments of German and American Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Chips all of which are homemade by the many great cooks at the church. And what would an Ice Cream Social be without Ice Cream and Chocolate or Carmel toppings and, of course the cake is still FREE.
