Superhero 5k! Fun for the whole family on October 25th, 2014

The Superhero 5k! Benefiting Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan's Scholarship Program.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Calling all Superheroes! Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan, a local non-profit program that promotes self-respect and healthy lifestyles to preteen girls, is hosting its second annual scholarship fundraising race, the Superhero 5k! This morning of SUPER fun for the whole family will take place Saturday, October 25th at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter.

The events includes a 1 mile and 5k run/walk along the park’s trails and a kids’ dash for children ages seven and younger. All 5k participants will receive a medal! The 1 mile and 5k are timed events, but all are invited to go their happy pace. Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite Superhero, and prizes will be awarded for both running speed and costume creativity.

“Our Superhero 5k is a fun and well-supported 5k benefitting our Girls on the Run scholarship program. We invite everyone in our community to join us in creating unique superhero costumes and getting some exercise at one of our beautiful Metroparks!” said Kelley Kozloff, 5k Event Coordinator for Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan.

In 2014, Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan served over 1,700 girls in their five-county council, which includes Washtenaw, Livingston, Lenawee, Monroe, and Jackson Counties. The council’s scholarship program provided financial assistance to 640 girls in need, giving them the opportunity to participate in the ten-week program and tap into their limitless potential. “I love doing Girls on the Run because I get to be with my friends, exercise, and learn about things like anti-bullying,” stated Evie Weiszhaar, a 2014 participant on the Girls on the Run team at Wylie Elementary School in Dexter, Michigan.

All proceeds from the Superhero 5k benefit the scholarship fund for Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan, which aims to make their program accessible to all girls in the community, regardless of their family’s ability to pay the program registration fee.

“Approximately 37% of our participants request and receive scholarships each year. In 2014 alone we provided $77,440 in financial assistance to families in need. The Superhero 5k is a great opportunity to get up and run or walk on a beautiful fall morning, have some fun with your family, and help us continue to make our life-changing program accessible to every girl in our community,” said Danielle Plunkett, Executive Director of Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan.
