Teenage Passenger Killed in Rollover Accident Near Chelsea

Three additional passengers were injured in the accident on I-94 in Washtenaw County on Tuesday night.

A 17-year-old from Jackson was killed following a rollover crash on I-94 near Chelsea on Tuesday.

According to Ann Arbor.com, the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. after the vehicle's driver steered the car onto the shoulder of the freeway while trying to pass other vehicles.

The Jackson teen and the driver, a 23-year-old woman from Ypsilanti, were ejected from the vehicle, the news reported. A 28-year-old Ypsilanti man and an infant, who were passengers in the vehicle also were injured in the crash.

According to the Michigan State Police, the teen and adults were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Witnesses told police the vehicle was traveling east at a high rate of speed and drifted onto the left shoulder of the freeway near Dancer Road as the driver tried to pass other vehicles. The car went into the median, then rolled over several times before coming to rest on its roof in the eastbound lanes of the freeway, police said in a press release.
