1 Dead, 2 Hurt In Oakland County Crash: Sheriff

Authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash​, which Oakland County detectives were still investigating.

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, MI — An elderly man was killed and two others were injured in a Saturday crash on the Dixie Highway in Independence Township, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

James Ziegenfelder, 72, from Springfield Township was driving a 2022 GMC Acadia on the Dixie Highway, just north of the Deer Lake Road intersection at 1:15 p.m., officials said.

Ziegenfelder tried turning left out of a restaurant parking lot at the intersection when his SUV was hit by a Ford Escape, officials said.

Ziegenfelder was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries, officials said.

Another 72-year-old who was the front seat passenger in Ziegenfelder's GMC was injured in the crash and listed in stable condition at a nearby hospital, officials said.

A 54-year-old Holly woman, who was driving the Ford, was treated and release from a nearby hospital, officials said.

All three people involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts, officials said.
