The man reportedly told police that he had been at a New Year’s Eve party at a Novi hotel and took an Uber car to Farmington Hills, where his friend lives. The key the friend gave him didn’t work, he said, so he kicked in the door after standing outside in the cold for about 45 minutes.

The man had a blood alcohol content of 0.13 percent, according to preliminary breath tests.

He was charged with entering without permission. The woman’s apartment door sustained unspecified damage.
