3 Oakland County Communities Under Boil Water Advisory

OAKLAND COUNTY, MI — Residents in Novi, Walled Lake and Commerce Township are under a boil water advisory following a water main break Sunday evening at 14 Mile Road and Drake Road in Farmington Hills.

The water main break affects eight metro Detroit communities, which includes Keego Harbor, Sylvan Lake, West Bloomfield, Farmington Hills, Commerce Township, Novi, Walled Lake and Wixom.

Although the Great Lakes Water Authority said in a statement that the pressure in the system never dropped to the point that would require a boil water advisory, "individual communities may have experienced pressure drops significant enough to warrant them to issue a boil water advisory out of an abundance of caution."

The break also forced the Novi Consolidated School District and the Walled Lake Consolidated School District to cancel classes on Monday.

"After the water main is placed back in service bacteriological samples will be collected to determine that the water quality meets the state drinking water standards. We will inform you when tests show no bacteria and you no longer need to boil your water," Novi said in a release.

Farmington Hills has not issued a citywide boil water advisory alert and said in a statement "the Farmington Hills system is functional and operational."

Residents under a boil water advisory should boil water for at least one minute and let it stand for about 15 minutes to cool before drinking it.

14 Mile Road east of Drake Road in Farmington Hills is closed through Thursday, West Bloomfield Police said.
