Botsford Hospital opens Mohs Surgery Center to treat skin cancer

Dr. Brian Kopitzki leads Botsford's Mohs Surgery Center

Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills has added a new skin cancer treatment service. It opened to patients last week. Located in a suite within the Botsford Cancer Center, the Botsford Mohs Surgery Center is led by Brian Kopitzki, D.O. He is a fellowship trained Mohs surgeon and board-certified dermatologist.

Mohs surgery is used mostly to treat the most common forms of skin cancer, which are basal and squamous cell carcinomas. The Mohs procedure removes a minimal amount of normal tissue, especially important in cosmetically sensitive areas such as the face.

Skin cancer is the most widespread form of all cancers in the U.S. and is on the rise. This year, about two million Americans will be diagnosed. Fortunately, skin cancer almost always can be cured when detected and treated early. Seeking medical attention at the first suspicion of skin cancer is critical to successful treatment.

Are you worried you might have skin cancer? Dr. Kopitzki says the most common warning sign is a change on your skin, typically a new growth, or a change in an existing growth or mole. The best thing you can do is to see your dermatologist or primary care doctor, because early detection and treatment are very important. Do not wait. If you need to find a dermatologist, call Botsford’s physician referral service at 877-477-3621.

If you have tested positive for basal or squamous cell carcinoma, you may self-refer to the Botsford Mohs Surgery Center by calling 248-473-4828. Or, your doctor may refer you to the center. Find the center at 27900 Grand River Avenue, Suite 230, in Farmington Hills.
