Botsford Hospital recognizes extraordinary nurse Marvic Malabanan

Farmington resident receives Botsford Hospital's first DAISY Award

Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, Mich., has begun honoring members of its nursing staff with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The first award recipient is Marvic Malabanan, RN, BSN, of Farmington, who works on Botsford’s 4 South Ortho/Neuro/Trauma Unit. Malabanan was nominated for this award because of his exceptional care, communication and empathic skills.

A patient described Malabanan’s service: “I owe a debt of gratitude to Marvic, a nurse who took the time and cared to listen to me when I was in a bad situation from a knee injury and was stressed out over my pets. It would be an honor to say to him, ‘Thank you for the time; thank you for the care; thank you for the ability to listen because most people don’t have that.’ When you have the ability to listen to and care about people, and you have compassion and a good soul, you have what this man has. He is such a good person and needs to be honored. If I had a son, I would want him to be just like Marvic. He was just absolutely phenomenal during the three days I was there, helping me in a time of stress and worry. He took care of me and needs to be especially honored. I want to thank him for helping me.”

Each month, a nurse will be selected by Botsford’s DAISY Award committee, which is comprised of nurses representing many nursing specialties. At a presentation given in front of the nurse’s colleagues, patients and visitors, the honoree will receive a certificate, which reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” The honoree will also be given a sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch” that is hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.

“We’re proud to say we now have the DAISY program at Botsford to honor our extraordinary nurses,” says Marge Hasler, RN, Botsford’s vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer. “Marvic, our first DAISY awardee, exemplifies amazing nurses who come to work every day to help people and make them healthier and happier whenever they can. It just made a lot of sense to us to support our talented nurses by adopting this internationally acclaimed recognition program.”

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in 1999 from complications of an auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
