As a conservative and a Republican, I was so embarrassed for the Presidential candidates during their debate last Wednesday evening in Las Vegas. You have probably already seen more video clips and news reports than your sane mind can bear, and I don't blame you. The only one who had any semblance ofΒ presidential stature was Newt Gingrich. At least he had the good sense toΒ maintain his adulthood while the others seemedΒ to look more like self-centered childrenΒ bickering, as they often do, over things that will not really make a differenceΒ at the end of the day anyway.Β
As devastatingly foolish and discouraging as all this was, all is not lost. Historically, this very thing has happened beforeΒ in American politics. Things got so heated at the Constitutional Convention that our forefathers were embroiled in all out personal verbal attacks. Things became so bad, some were threatening fistfights and duels, while others were making plans to go home. There was a very real possibility that the fragile unionΒ could dissolve. Then a remarkable thing happened. This, by the way, is the same way we can get through our own political cross-party stalemate. It will take someone with the stature of Benjamin Franklin, who can command the respect of everyone involved.
His message was simple and direct. Let's all take three days off to go our respective churches and pray for Divine intervention. Miraculously, they all returned three days later in such a state of unity that they Β quickly drafted the Constitution that preservesΒ our nation to this day.

Immature, self-centered leaders is what God told Israel they would have if they stopped following Him. Our nation and it's leaders, in almost every field, are reflections of just such conditions. Our "good old fashioned American ingenuity" isn't going to get us out of this mess. Let'sΒ be real honest with ourselves, we don't have a champion on the horizon, in any party, business, university, church or otherwise, who can save us. This is not meant to be disrespectful to anyone. We do have some extremely remarkable people available to help us, but we need God. He promised that if His people would humble themselves, admit we need His help, turn from our sinful,self-centered ways, and ask Him to help us, He will heal our land. All is NOT lost!
