Welcome Home!

Welcome house guests with open arms with these tips.

It seems that many of us open our homes to out of town guests, friends and family alike, whether hosting a big event or just enjoying company. Β I know that when we have overnight guests, it’s important to me that they feel comfortable, at home and that their needs are taken care of.

Have you ever stayed with someone only to discover that their idea of breakfast is a pop tart or that they don’t own a coffee pot? Β No coffee first thing in the morning would be a real problem for me. Β We all have our preferences and habits and as a host it’s a good idea to ask ahead of time if there are any particular needs or dietary restrictions/issues that you should be aware of. I’ve put together a check list of things you can do to make your guest(s) feel at home during their visit. Β I am sure you all will have some other suggestions, as well. Β Please comment here and share your ideas also.

Welcoming Your Guests:

  • Put freshly laundered sheets on the bed; noone wants to sleep on musty, old-closet smelling linens.
  • Leave towels (hand and bath) in your guest room and then show your guest where to find additional towels for their use.
  • Don’t forget a bouquet of fresh flowers or a flowering plant β€” this really says, β€œwe’re glad you’re here.”
  • Go the extra mile and put a basket of toiletries on the bathroom counter or in their room β€” someone always forgets a toothbrush, shampoo or hand lotion.
  • Find out ahead of time what they like for breakfast. Β It’s so welcoming to come down in the morning and find a steaming pot of coffee, fresh baked goods or a bowl of fruit and granola.
  • Does your guestroom have a clock? Β Many of us rely on our phones now for everything but it is so nice to see the time at a glance when you wake in a dark room.
  • A small lamp for reading and a night light are also important considerations for overnight guests.
  • Do the windows in the guestroom have shades or some sort of privacy blind? Aunt Millie may not want to wonder if your neighbor can see her in her nightie.
  • What about the front of your house? Is it time for a new Welcome mat? They don’t cost much and it really invites people in.

Again, I would love to hear your suggestions. Β Next we’ll talk about guest etiquette and what to do so you get invited back.
