Cheap Eats: Pound o' Potato at Mayberry's Restaurant

Hard to say which is more fun, getting an inexpensive dinner or taking a walk down memory lane.

When it comes to themed restaurants, Mayberry's on Grand River in Farmington Hills is one of my favorites. But I don't keep going back just to see all the Andy Griffith Show decor.

In its 21st year, this cozy restaurant's menu includes one of my favorite Cheap Eats deals:

Mayberry's Restaurant

Deal: "Monster Bake" 1-Plus Pound Baked Potato

Cost: $5.99 each

What you get: Mayberry's serves up huge bakers, cooked to perfection and heaped with a variety of toppings. My favorite is broccoli and cheddar, because the veggies are brightly colored and flavorful and the cheese is real cheddar, not some saucy goop. You can also order a veggie mix, bacon and cheddar, taco fixings or chili as toppers. I've gotten close, but never managed to clean my plate.

Bill for two diners: Just under $12 plus tax

Seeing all my favorite characters from The Andy Griffith Show makes going to Mayberry's a special occasion. Posters and pictures throughout the restaurant bring back great memories from my childhood – especially the panels on some of the booths toward the front of the restaurant. Floyd the barber was one smart cookie.

If a Monster Bake isn't your cup of tea, the menu has plenty of other options, including a delicious-looking "butcher's cut" pot roast for $7.99, served with your choice of sides and rolls that are baked fresh daily.
