Children's Store a Drive-Through with Kid Behind the Wheel

A boy — police didn't disclose his age — was told to wait patiently in the car while his mother shopped. He didn't, and then this happened:

FARMINGTON HILLS, MI – A child whose mother told him to wait in the car while she shopped took it on a joyride that ended with a crash into the front of a children’s store around 6: 30 p.m.Thursday night, Farmington Hills police said.

Instead of waiting as he had been told, the boy “started driving around the parking lot” of the Carter’s store off Orchard Lake Road and 14 Mile Road,. Farmington Hills Police Sgt. Mike Flatt told The Detroit News.

He realized he was headed to busy Orchard Lake Road and accidentally put the car in reverse and “drove into the store.”

The family’s sedan plowed into the front of the Carter’s store and stopped about 15 feet in, police said. No one was injured, and Flatt said it was fortunate the accident didn’t occur during peak shopping hours.

“Thank God,” he said. “It was a lucky situation.”

The young driver — police aren’t saying how young, only that he is a juvenile — was released to his mother. The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case for possible juvenile charges.
