Crime Report: Farmington Resident Reports Online Loan Fraud

A Farmington woman who applied for a loan through a website told that the company failed to provide the loan after she sent them $255. 

According to the report, the woman told police she entered personal information into a website that promised to connect her with a lender. On April 10, she was contacted by a lender, CashAdvance USA, about applying for a $3,000 loan and told that she needed to wire $255 to an address in Nepal. The report indicated that the woman wired the money, but never received a loan contract or check. She also told police the company asked her for additional funds, but she refused. An officer reported that a Google search of the company name turned up fraud warnings. 

Stolen bike recovered

A Redford man faces a charge of receiving stolen property, after police found him with a bicycle taken from on April 8. According to the report, an officer stopped the man, who was walking with a blue mountain bike, at around 6 p.m. in the area of Grand River and School St. The man told the officer that a friend had loaned him the bike, but when contacted by police, the friend did not confirm that information, the report indicated. Police contacted the bicycle's owner, who had filed a report with , and the description he gave matched the bike the Redford man had. The Redford man was taken into custody and held on $300 bond; according to the report, a check of his background showed an outstanding warrant for home invasion.

Fraud related to income tax filing

A Farmington resident told police April 7 that she had her taxes done by an agency in Detroit on March 31, and on April 1, the company informed her that someone had already filed a tax return with her personal information. The report indicated the woman contacted the Internal Revenue Service, but the agency would not open an investigation until she had filed a report with police.
