Farmington Hills nurse recognized for giving wonderful care
Nurse Melissa Wease is awesome!

Botsford Hospital has selected Melissa Wease, RN, a resident of Farmington Hills, to be the June recipient of its DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. She works on Botsford’s 4 South Ortho/Neuro/Trauma Unit. Wease was nominated for this award by a patient who must remain anonymous for safety reasons.
“My nurse Melissa took so much time to support me through my discharge. I had been given a number to call to make arrangements to enter a battered women’s shelter. I am 18 years old and haven’t had to do this before, so I was scared. Melissa called the number and learned the shelter was full. So, she took the time to find another shelter for me. She reviewed my discharge instructions and gave me so much emotional support. I felt like she was treating me like family. From the bottom of my heart I thank Melissa for the wonderful care she gave to me. Because of her special attention and encouragement, I feel I am ready to face some really rough times ahead.”
Each month, Botsford’s DAISY Award committee selects one nurse from all the nominations it has received. At a presentation given in front of the nurse’s colleagues, patients and visitors, the honoree receives a certificate, which reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” The honoree also is given a sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch” that is hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in 1999 from complications of an auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
