FARMINGTON HILLS, MI — A gas station canopy collapsed and caught fire amid heavy winds from a severe thunderstorm Wednesday afternoon in Farmington Hills, according to officials.

Officials said the canopy fell onto multiple vehicles that were using the fuel pumps at the Citgo gas station on 10 Mile and Middlebelt roads.

The canopy also fell onto a fuel pump, which then caught fire, but firefighters quickly extinguished the flames within 10 minutes, according to officials.

Gas station employees also quickly initiated the station’s emergency shut off, according to officials.

Officials were still investigating the incident.

An EF-1 tornado struck neighboring Livonia during the storms Wednesday, killing a 2-year-old boy and injuring his mother, according to police.

There were still nearly 14,000 people without power Thursday morning in the metro Detroit area, mostly in the Livonia area, according to the DTE Outage Map.
